AmeriCorps

AmeriCorps members are making a powerful impact on the most critical issues facing our nation. AmeriCorps, the domestic version of the Peace Corps, provides opportunities for more than 80,000 Americans to give back in an intensive way to thier communities and country each year.

At Casa de Amigos the AmeriCorps tradition has continued to expand. Casa de Amigos' relationship with AmeriCorps began in 1994, with one member. Since that time, many members of AmeriCorps have contributed to Casa de Amigos' mission to "improve the quality of life throughout the community by helping people help themselves" and to the AmeriCorps' mission of "getting things done."

The 2011-2012 AmeriCorps STARS (Student Tutoring Assessment Readiness Success) project at Casa de Amigos tutors mostly elementary students on a one-to-one basis in reading. Training is provided. Members also complete various service projects throughout the community in partnership with other agencies like Keep Midland Beautiful, Community and Senior Services, and Habitat for Humanity, to name a few. In addition to a monthly living allowance, members will recieve an education award upon successful completion of service. The education award can be used to pay for college tuition or student loans and members 55+ can transfer thier award to a child or grandchild!
